Notes From Around the Arena
August 20th -26th, 2013
How I see it.
This was a crazy busy week with lots of driving.
We drove to Redding on Tuesday out to Jacqueline Cooley's place to look at another horse for Maddy.
We met Axel and Gus.
Axel was a cutie, black with 4 white stockings, 2 years old and about the same size as Maddy's horse Cowboy.
To give you an idea of this guy, he is a cross between Pharaoh and Macaroni.
Antsy, nippy, bossy. Regal, slick, and had that "smarter then you," look in his eye.
Not really a horse to "learn" how to train, in minutes he would be training Maddy, and he would be rude and bossy about it.
He is just a little to smart.
That one would do better with someone who has done this a bunch of times already.
Then we met Gus.
Tri colored, brown and white paint with black mane and tail, 3 years old and bigger then our tallest horse Tikkun.
Yikes!
But he was just so sweet. Maddy lead him around some and we really liked his attitude.
Jacqueline turned him out in the arena and got him to run around some. He was all excited and bounced around like a deer.
But then he went into this beautiful elegant extended trot that made me think he would be gorgeous as an english horse.
Then Maddy caught him and put him into the round pen so we could trot him out to check for any lameness.
Maddy did a great job getting movement and directional control. He had not done much of this stuff.
Within a few minutes Maddy had speed control as well. And we saw no lameness.
I picked up his feet and did a little flexion of his joints he was pretty good for that and his joints were smooth.
Within just a little bit Maddy was already correcting him for not stopping when she did. And for crowding her space.
It was great to see the natural flow and comfort Maddy had with this horse.
After some paperwork, Maddy walked her new horse into the trailer with absolutely no issue. And away we went.
He stood patiently and quiet while we grabbed some lunch and had pretty great balance in the trailer.
Maddy's new horse is at the ranch! His Name is "Payton"
Congratulations Maddy!
Check him out.
